According to an article on Netwerk24, several lobby groups associated with Afrikaans are to assemble and discuss the proposed new language policy of Stellenbosch University, so as to come to terms with what the majority agree upon. Those that are to attend the meeting include representatives of AfriForum, the Afrikaanse Taalraad, Solidariteit se Helpende Hand, and the Federasie van Afrikaanse Kultuurverenigings (FAK).
The meeting follows the founding of the Gelyke Kanse initiative of which Breyten Breytenbach is a leading figure for the preservation of Afrikaans at the university. Lawyer Danie Rossouw, who represents the Gelyke Kanse group, stated that the majority of the groups already shared their opinions regarding the proposed new policy as a part of public participation. “The objective of this meeting is to bring everyone together so that we can voice our opinions and hopefully reach a mutual consensus.”
“We will also capitalise on this opportunity by discussing ways in which we can involve the youth in this cause to preserve Afrikaans at the University. “There is a recurring assumption that a bunch of racist white males are conspiring to make the university exclusively Afrikaans, and we cannot allow for that assumption to persist. We merely stand for equal opportunities for Afrikaans and English to have a place at the University. We are aware that there are English speaking people that agree and support the Gelyke Kanse initiative.”
